I know there are a lot of different ways a teacher can use a blog in their classroom from 1st grade all the way until college. I would like to start a blog for each of my classrooms and post questions regarding that day's lesson. I was wondering if anyone has done this and how successful it was. I am just worried about students not having internet access at home and therefore not being able to complete the assignments.
I think that's a pretty tall order, a post for each class each day and then to follow up on all those posts each day. Maybe you may want to narrow it down to the concept being taught at the moment instead? Perhaps discussing and sharing links on how your concept is relevant to other subject areas? If they don't have access at home, they can do it during homeroom perhaps? I do know that my students, for as poor as they are, always go over each others homes to use their computers and internet. They always find a way if they want to badly enough.
ReplyDeleteI, too, am worried about the access to the blog outside of school. I feel it would be unfair to assign something that must use the Internet because there are some students that do not have access at home. Teachers have always suggested going to the local library to use the computers.
ReplyDeleteJim, other teaches the same thing to me about having the students use the library. I do not think it is fair for the students that do not have internet access have to walk to the library daily/weekly to do a question online. What are your thoughts on this?
ReplyDeleteUnless the district offers a computer for every student, I see it as being unfair to assign something that requires a computer to complete. My brother in law works in a district that gave every high school student a macbook, I find that absolutely fantastic. I brought that idea up to my principal and she giggled at me, no kidding. The only way I can think of being fair when assigning a computer related assignment is to offer enough class time in a computer lab to complete the assignment.
ReplyDeleteI would start with surveying the class to see how many don't have easy access to the Internet. The number of students in that category will probably make the decision for you. If there's only a few then I would require as many posts as I could provide computer access for those students. You don't have to provide computer access for everyone. I would be discreet about it though. Some students may be embarrassed to admit they don't have computers. I haven't had that happen. Students have readily volunteered that their computer was down or that their parents wouldn't pay for Internet.
